6 Things to Do in Bern's Old Town - A UNESCO World Heritage Site

With so many beautiful cities in Switzerland, it's hard to choose just one. But of the ones that I have seen, Bern has drawn me in and might just be my favorite. It's not hard to see why the medieval old town has been named a UNESCO world heritage site. The stunning town is encircled by the river Aare and boasts being the location of the federal parliament building (Bern is also the capital of Switzerland). In addition, the Altstadt (old town) has a beautiful and iconic clock tower, beautiful architecture, great restaurants and shopping, and so much more.

1.  Check out the Famous Bern Clock Tower

Time your visit to the Bern Clocktower to the top of the hour and witness the sounds and movements of Bern's most recognizable landmark. The Zytglogge or Clock Tower was built in the early 13th century and has served the city as a guard tower, clock tower, center of urban life and a civic memorial.

2.  Stop at Albert Einstein's House

Yes, Albert Einstein lived in Bern! And he developed his theory of relatively right from this Bern apartment in the third floor of Kramgasse 49. The apartment is located in a spot that's impossible to miss right before the clock tower. As you stroll down the street you'll notice his picture in the window along with a sign pointing out the location. Visitors can pay an entrance fee or take a guided tour for a look inside. While I didn't get a chance to go inside, I'm hoping to do so on my next trip to Bern!

3.  Rent Bikes for Free

Get a little farther from the central Altstadt (old town) with free bike rentals offered by Bern Rollt. From May through October, they offer free rentals if you can provide an ID and a $20 deposit, which you will receive back after returning the bike.

Check out the website for more info and the location: http://www.bernrollt.ch/

My friend and I rode bikes from the rental area in central Bern to the rose garden. It was an enjoyable bike ride but I would not recommend for children or anyone who is not 100% comfortable biking in urban areas. There were a lot of tourists to dodge in the central Altstadt and cars on the roads to watch out for as we got farther from the center.

4.  Visit the Rose Garden

The Rose Garden is an absolute must-see if you are in Bern and was my favorite spot. Perching on a hill above the town, the Garden affords the most beautiful view of the river sweeping around the town in a U shape. With beautiful blooms, lush green grassy areas, a restaurant, and a lovely path overlooking the town, the Rose Garden is the best place to be on a sunny afternoon. Go for a stroll, smell the roses, and maybe even bring a picnic.

5. Stroll along the River

Surrounding the city on three sides, the beautiful river Aare can be seen from many places throughout the old town. Take a stroll down to the river on the south side Bern's old town to get close to the crystal-clear turquoise water of the Aare River. Enjoy the walking path along the river and see another side of Bern.

6.  Revel at Beautiful Architecture

With statues gracing every plaza and the tallest cathedral in Switzerland, just walking through Bern's Old Town is a treat.
